Mary K. Carroll is the Dwane W. Crichton Professor of Chemistry at Union College (Schenectady, NY).  She is active in the American Chemical Society (ACS) at the local and national levels, and has served as Councilor of the Eastern New York ACS section since 1998.

Mary Carroll earned a BS in chemistry from Union College (1986), and a PhD in analytical chemistry from Indiana University, Bloomington (1991). Following a postdoctoral stint at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, she joined the faculty of Union College in 1992. She has been recognized with the Stillman Prize for Excellence in Teaching (1995), the Faculty Meritorious Service Award (2012), and the Stillman Prize for Faculty Excellence in Research (2022).  In 2015, she received the 100 Inspiring Women in STEM Award from INSIGHT into Diversity magazine. She is currently on the Fulbright Specialist Roster (Chemistry Education).

At Union, Prof. Carroll teaches general chemistry, analytical chemistry and chemical instrumentation, as well as courses for non-science majors, mentors undergraduate research students, and engages in college service.

Since 2002, Mary Carroll has co-directed the Union College Aerogel Laboratory, a productive interdisciplinary research group. To date, more than 150 undergraduate STEM majors, several high-school students and faculty colleagues from Union and other institutions have participated in the group’s research in the fabrication, characterization and applications of aerogel materials.

In addition, she serves as Chief Science Officer for SunThru LLC, a company she co-founded for the purpose of developing and commercializing monolithic silica aerogel products for the daylighting market.

Based on her contributions to science and service to the ACS, Mary Carroll was selected for recognition as a member of the class of 2016 ACS Fellows.
